The most valuable lessons and teachings usually come from the mistakes we make. And the lessons we get from those inevitably provide us with wisdom. However, making a mistake is terrifying.
This is because some mistakes have dire consequences and some may have irreversible effects. And that thought alone is frightening.
Knowing that the mistake I can make may negatively change the course of my life forever.
So, to understand what we mean by 'we learn from our mistakes', we mean mistakes that can be reversible, not always in the now but also in the future. Those mistakes are different from bigger mistakes that can result in unforgiving circumstances.
To learn and improve oneself it is to be able to distinguish between those two different types of mistakes. Knowing the magnitude of the results of your actions.
Greater things have come from people making mistakes and trying again and again until they figure that one thing out. The wisest individuals have made some mistakes in their lives and got lessons from those which they can pass through to others through the wisdom that came with making those mistakes.
In the same breath. Others have made mistakes that saw them losing their lives (both metaphorically and literally). Worse, negatively affecting others who are innocent and had nothing to do with those choices and actions.
Making a mistake terrifies us purely because of the negative consequences I have mentioned above. The judgments and embarrassments that come with making irreversible mistakes are hard to accept and move on from them.
So, one needs to be able to identify the magnitude of the potential consequences that their actions may result in. We should be able to make mistakes as we can learn and develop from them, but the level of mistakes we make shall always be taken into account.
The fear of making mistakes can only be eliminated by being able to differentiate between the consequences of the mistakes. Their magnitudes.
Therefore, making mistakes and learning is always encouraged as long as those mistakes are within the confinements of being reversed, lessons learned from them, and improve our lives.
Mistakes that have dire consequences shall be avoided. And yes, we are right in being afraid of making those kind of mistakes.
The onus is on each individual to harness their skill to correctly identify the magnitudes of the consequences of their actions. In whatever task that is, big or small.
This will make one not be so afraid of living their lives, which encompasses making some mistakes and learning from them. That ability will also come with the responsibility of understanding the dire consequences that may come with making BIG mistakes that can potentially literally kill you, and others.
It is all about being able to identify the magnitude of the potential consequence that may arise from a choice made and the action taken.
