South Africans spend an average of 10 hours watching TV every day, says Josh Howard, a researcher at Exploding Topics.
Looking at the kind of content that is on most SA Tv channels, it is without a doubt to recognise that South Africans consume content that is neither developmental nor building, and therefore breeding people of no substance.
I will not get onto how much time people spend on social media, that is a topic for another day.
What you need is a set of tools and alternative activities that you naturally gravitate towards and can rotate between — keeping your evenings flexible and productive. Moreover, activities that will be developmental to your life and possibly change the direction of your immediate future. Because the garbage that dominate South African primetime television can never be developmental to you in any way, shape, or form. Now, you don't need to throw your TV out the window, or completely stop watching TV and force yourself into some complicated evening routine. You just need to be conscious and manage how you spend your time on your every living day - meaning use your time wisely.
Here are a few things you can do in your evenings in substitution for wasting your life away binging trash television:
Remove The TV From Your Bedroom Rooms serve purposes. Kitchens are for cooking, dining rooms are for dining, offices are for working, and bedrooms are for sleeping. The better we use each room for its purpose, the more productive we become. Use your bedroom for sleep and intimacy, and remove work items, laptops, and televisions from your sleeping environment.
Don’t Let Your Mind Eat Junk Reality TV, telenovelas, and celebrity gossip are like junk food for our brains. It’s low quality, highly processed, and despite knowing how bad it is, we consume it anyways. Start putting on a good movie or documentary, and if you have the privilege of access to the internet follow YouTube creators who make high-quality content. Committing to this type of entertainment will surely be beneficial to you, you can get knowledgeable, acquire new skills, and be an overall better human being.
Read Something Fun And Not Work-Related
Research shows that reading fiction is one of the most effective ways to reduce stress. Stress levels are shown to decrease by 68% after reading fiction — which is more than listening to music, walking, or drinking tea.
To develop yourself, commit to non-fiction books, choose a subject or discipline you wanna learn more about and get books in that discipline. This has many benefits and will undoubtedly yield more positive results in your life than any of the trash content many people religiously commit to every evening, year in and year out.
I hope at least one of these activities inspires you to spend less time-consuming things that are of no value and start engaging in activities that are of high value that will not solely benefit you but your whole family and therefore your community.
